Why PPE Matters Before You Touch Mold
Cleaning mold disturbs spores and makes them airborne — and inhaled spores are how most exposure happens. The right protective equipment is scaled to the size of the contamination, not the homeowner's comfort. At a minimum, NIOSH-approved N95 respirators filter the large particles, but they do not seal around the face the way a half-face or full-face HEPA respirator does. For projects beyond a few small patches, goggles without open ventilation holes block fine spores from the eyes, and long rubber, nitrile, or polyurethane gloves protect the skin from mycotoxins and cleaning chemicals.
Scaling Protection to Project Size
The size of the mold job dictates the equipment. Small projects — a patch or two under roughly 10 square feet total — can be handled by a trained homeowner with an N95 and basic containment. Medium projects (10 to 32 square feet) require half-face or full-face HEPA respirators, isolation barriers, and disposable coveralls. Extensive projects over 32 square feet are professional-only territory: full system shutdown, negative air containment, and P100 PAPR respirators for everyone entering the space.

Respiratory protection is the first step, but the full list matters: goggles (no vent holes), gloves that reach past the wrist, and disposable clothing that is removed and bagged before leaving the work area. Never reuse disposable respirators between rooms, and always wash exposed skin immediately after the work session. If you smell mold but cannot see it, or if the affected area keeps growing, stop — that is the signal that the job has crossed out of DIY range.
